Tricks of the Trade in Marketing

As a marketer, it's important to know some tricks that actually work in getting people's attention and engaging them with your brand. Things like social proof through likes, comments and shares; the use of emotional language and images; contests and giveaways; and FOMO or 'fear of missing out' can be very effective.

Here are some that we have seen working most.

  • Scarcity: Creating the perception that a product, service, or opportunity is in limited supply. This encourages people to act quickly before it's gone.

  • Social Influence: Highlighting how others are engaging with your brand, whether through likes, shares, reviews or word-of-mouth. People are strongly influenced by the behavior and opinions of others.

  • Reciprocity: Giving something away for free or doing a small favor for someone that makes them feel obligated to give something back to you in return like a purchase, subscription, or referral.

  • Anchoring: Presenting an initial high price or exaggerated statistic that makes any other prices or numbers seem more reasonable by comparison. This is a cognitive bias that can be used to sway people's perceptions.

  • Loss Aversion: Framing something as a potential loss that people want to avoid, rather than a gain. Since people are more motivated to avoid losses, this can be an effective strategy.

What do you think of these additional marketing tricks?

Are there any others you would add to the list?
